From my former boss’s column:
” Tonight’s moon will be showing us a thin 6.5% sunlit face with the cusps of the crescent pointing up a little toward the upper left. Tuesday evening’s moon shows us a 13% sunlit portion.
Tonight and Tuesday night are also good times to look for “earth shine” on the moon’s “dark” side. This reflected light from the earth faintly illuminates the part of the moon that direct sunlight doesn’t reach. It’s most noticeable when we have a slim crescent moon like tonight’s. The earth shine phenomena was first explained by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1500s and it’s still sometimes called “da Vinci light”. ”
